Use All Three Metal Effects Kits To Create Drippy Abstract Canvas Art

Create Your Own Patina Art | How to DIY Tutorial on the Modern Masters Blog | Project by Debbie Hayes of My Patch of Blue Sky

Effortless artsy, rusty, crusty effects are all the rage right now, thanks to Modern Masters and their fabulous Metal Effects line. They’ve also recently introduced Metal Effects Kits in Rust, Green and Blue Patinas, available online at TheHomeDepot.com. If you love crusty stuff, like old cars, metal accessories, and even artwork, we are kindred spirits. For years I have been scavenging in the local junkyard for years to grab gorgeous scraps of real copper and rust, made by nature, to incorporate into custom metal artwork for clients.

Effortless artsy, rusty, crusty effects are all the rage right now, thanks to Modern Masters and their fabulous new Paint Oxidizing Finish Kits that come in Rust, Green, and Blue. If you love crusty stuff, like old cars, metal accessories, and even artwork, we are kindred spirits. For years I have been scavenging in the local junkyard for years to grab gorgeous scraps of real copper and rust, made by nature, to incorporate into custom metal artwork for clients.

Now that Modern Masters has debuted these three kits, perfect for one or two smaller projects, I make way fewer trips to the scrap heap. Rust and patina are right at my fingertips, and even though I was a faux finisher for many years, no special skills are required to make most any object look aged.

Everything you need is included in the Metal Effects Kits so you can jump right into creating your masterpiece. Find something cool to paint – a lamp base, a small tabletop, or a garden statue – about any paintable surface will work, like metal, wood, drywall, plaster, or plastic.

I decided to use an 18″ square canvas from Michaels for my quick project. Who doesn’t need another great piece of art to hang, prop on a shelf, or give as a gift, right?

You can do a great project using any one of the kits, but I always love to experiment, so I am using all three of the kits: Rust, Green Patina and Blue Patina. (Modern Masters features great, quick videos using each of the products individually on their YouTube Channel.)

Modern Masters Metal Effects Kits available online at TheHomeDepot.comHERE’S WHAT’S INCLUDED IN EACH KIT, to cover about 18 square feet:

8 ounces of Primer, 8 ounces of Reactive Paint, 10 ounces of Aging Solution, 2 brushes, 2 stir sticks and complete instructions. The Rust kit also includes the recommended Permacoat Xtreme Sealer.

Before you get started, prep the area with a drop cloth and plastic as needed. It’s a good idea not to invite kids and pets since you will be spraying. Make sure your area is well ventilated, too.

USE THE RUST KIT FIRST

Using the Modern Masters Rust kit, paint two coats of Primer.

Some surfaces, such as metal or plastic, may need a bonding primer prior to starting your Metal Effects project. This will ensure your surface is properly prepared. I did not need to use a special primer for my canvas project. Now, brush your first coat of Metal Effects Primer. Let dry and add one more coat. Let dry.

Brush on two coats of iron paint. Let dry.

Brush on a coat of Iron Reactive Paint. Let dry. Brush on another coat and let dry.

Spray the rust activator once, wait 5 minutes and spray again.

In order to allow the activating and patina solutions to drip, I found a basket to prop the canvas on, and added some terry towels to catch the excess drips.

Use the Rust Activator, and spray at the top, about 1/4 of the way down. Wait five minutes, and spray again.

The rust step complete.

Let dry until the magic is complete. Actual oxidation occurs, and If you spray too much, the whole area could turn black, so go easy. Some of my background turned black, which I like, after only one application. You could opt to stop right now and apply the sealer, according to the directions.

USE THE GREEN AND BLUE PATINA KITS TO ADD INTEREST

Use Modern Masters paint oxidizing kits to create artwork on canvas. Tutorial.

FIRST, USE THE GREEN PATINA FINISH, WITH COPPER PAINT

Brush on copper paint, the spray green patina.

About 1/3 of the way down from the top, brush on some Copper Reactive Metallic Paint. I used sort of a zigzag pattern, but anything goes.

Spray the green patina solution.

Spray the Green Patina Aging Solution only over the copper paint area while it is still wet. You can use the mist option, or the stream, or both. Let dry until the green appears.

Switch to the Blue Patina Kit. Down below the green patina, paint a zigzag pattern with the Bronze Reactive Metallic Paint color. While wet, mist or use the stream option of the Blue Patina Aging Solution. Let the patina magic happen.

I worked on this canvas all during the day, while I was running around doing other things. That way, I could let the patina happen, add more of the copper or bronze and solution, until I felt like I was done.

Normally at this point I would follow the proper procedure of adding the Permacoat Xtreme sealer to protect the rust, and keep it from coming on on your fingers and clothes. But for art, I like to leave off the sealer and let nature reign.

Modern Masters Metal Effects Makes Rusty, Patinated Wall Art Magic

How to Mix Modern Masters Metal Effects PatinasOur Greensboro, North Carolina winter is blah! Dull, dark and dreary. But this week I experienced some creative excitement that beat the gloom for me while cooped up in the house. Packages from Modern Masters arrived on my doorstep, chock full of their Metal Effects products. My goal: to create something rusty and fabulous with gorgeous green patina like you find on ancient hardware and statuary.

And I thought Christmas was over.

I have spent over 15 years as a full time faux finisher, yet I never discovered these crazy fun, addictive products! I know you have seen stunning finishes on walls and furniture on Pinterest and in magazines and drooled over the look thinking they are impossible for a DIYer to achieve.

Oh, it’s so not so!

THE BEFORE PHOTO

Modern Masters Artwork Before

OK, put on your sweatshirt, woolen hat and mittens and trek to the attic or basement to unearth something to practice on. To get a more dramatic effect, choose something with pattern and depth like this metal wall art. Mine is like a section from a century old tin store ceiling and I’m betting you have something similar. Give it a good cleaning with soap and water and wipe dry.

Modern Masters Metal Effects products

It’s hard to believe that I got this amazing look using only a few products. But I did take ten minutes to watch the related Modern Masters Metal Effects videos, Metal Effects Patina Finishes and Metal Effects Rust Finishes, before I began my project. I created my finish a bit differently, so use my directions for this project.

SUPPLIES

PREP YOUR WORK AREA.

I worked on my studio table top covered with a heavy drop cloth with no kitties (or little ones) around. Be sure to carefully read the instructions on each label that include info like having proper ventilation. Be aware that the spray mist can travel and may stain, so cover anything precious.

BRUSH ON 2 COATS OF METAL EFFECTS PRIMER AND LET DRY OVERNIGHT.

Modern Masters Primer

BRUSH ON 2 COATS OF IRON REACTIVE PAINT AND LET DRY.

Modern Masters Iron Oxidizing Paint

I skipped some areas just to see what would happen. Here it is when dry.

Modern Masters Iron Oxidizing Paint

ROLL ON 2 COATS OF COPPER REACTIVE METALLIC PAINT, HITTING THE HIGH AREAS. Do not let the 2nd coat dry.

Modern Masters Copper Paint

ATTACH THE SPRITZER CAP TO THE GREEN PATINA AGING SOLUTION BOTTLE AND SPRAY LIBERALLY.

Modern Masters Green Patina

Wait. Wait a little more. Then watch the green patina finish evolve over a couple of hours. Depending upon your piece, you may need to spray the Rust Activator over the Iron Reactive Paint when the Green Patina Aging Solution is dry. I actually did not need it to get this look. Since the Green Patina Aging Solution acts as its own sealer, I did not need to seal it. If you wanted to seal after using the Rust Activator, use the Permacoat Xtreme sealer and topcoat as it was created specifically for an overall rust finish.

What do you think? How do you like my new crusty masterpiece hung on top of our silver leaf wall? Stay tuned as in February I will be posting my wall finish project using Modern Masters Metallic Plaster. Then I will reveal the final look in our master bedroom.

Let me guess. I think you are on the Modern Masters website now to find the retailer closest to you to get these products ASAP!

French Patina | Patinas in France & other inspiring images via the Modern Masters Cafe BlogThis has a little of everything, no? While the rust is the result of the oxidation of metal, the lovely greenish blue patina is the natural result of copper or bronze continuously coming into contact with moisture in the air.  This verdigris and rust beauty can be found in France and was featured in the PlumSiena blog. Mixing the Metal Effects products would achieve this look.

The now defunct House & Garden magazine featured a beautiful array of patina options for gardens. Iron ornaments, oxidized metal sculptures and pots with chipped layers of paint were suggested. Although these are antiques, the easiest and most cost-effective solution to speed up the process is decorative and specialty paints.

Looksi Here! DIY Projects with Modern Masters

We’ve recently had the opportunity of working with a variety of wonderful bloggers. They each wanted to showcase how Modern Masters products could enhance their DIY and Craft projects in our “Shine Big, Shine Small” campaign with Looksi Square. Looksi is a submission-based site serving the DIY, crafting, home & gardening communities with a way to discover new bloggers, posts and projects. They provide top-of-the-line tutorials, how-tos and informative posts, all in one location. The “Shine Big, Shine Small” projects focused on how metallics have the ability to glam up a space in a small or big way. We’ve picked a few of those projects to share this week and are excited to show you the fantastic results!

Before photo of an urn planter transformed with Modern Masters Metal Effects | By Tweak & Style

Debbie of Tweak & Style shares this urn planter as one of her craft projects. The plastic finish which offered a good design was just a bit too plain for her taste (above). By using our Metal Effects Primer and Iron Reactive Paint (below), she was able to give this piece an authentic rust finish. Since she planned on leaving it outdoors, it was protected with Modern Masters Permacoat Xtreme, a topcoat specially designed to stop the oxidized metal finish and minimize any further corrosion.

Doesn’t it look great? She also offers a quick tutorial on how to achieve this look on her blog.

Next, we follow up with DeDe of Designed Decor. She shares in her DIY project post that her drop leaf table and 4 chairs were in need of some serious TLC. Here is what it all looked like beforehand.

Drop leaf table and chairs before being finished with Modern Masters Champagne Metallic Paint | By Designed Decor

Now she was ready for the fun part! DeDe used our Black Pearl and Champagne metallic paints to give this set a completely new look (below). Black Pearl was used for the base coat which provided an elegant black metallic finish while Champagne accented the grooves and details giving new life to this old, run down table. She then used MasterClear® Protective Topcoat to protect everything.

Laura of Pet Scribbles decided to redo her old box planters by “turning wood into metal” with our Metal Effects products! She shares her step by step tutorial on her blog as well.

Wood planter boxes about to be transformed with Modern Masters Metal Effects | By Pet Scribbles

After some serious prep work on the beaten up paint finish (above), she applied 2 coats of our Metal Effects Primer which is designed to block the Patina Aging Solutions & Rust Activator from reaching the metal or wood surface. Once dry, the planters were now ready for the Copper Reactive Metallic Paint. Since it contains real metal particles, she could’ve walked away and left the planters to weather & patina on their own but who wants to wait that long? She used our Green Patina Aging Solution to speed things up and give these planters their striking new look (below). The shiny copper finish combined with the green patina make a great combination!

Last but not least is a DIY project by Tara of Suburble. The natural rust finish of this old metal bench (below) may have been perfect for someone else but she had other plans in mind. She salvaged this bench from the scrap heap by transforming it with the same Copper Reactive Metallic Paint.

A metal bench before being transformed with Modern Masters Metal Effects | By SuburbleAfter a bit of prep work and a few coats of the Metal Effects primer, a beautiful copper finish was ready for patina. Tara decided to go with the Blue Patina Aging Solution and gave this bench a knock out finish (below)!

Hutch makeover accented with Modern Masters Smoke Metallic Paint | By A to Z Custom Creations

The dark metallic shimmer of Smoke Metallic Paint works beautifully with the bold red of this striking painted hutch and gives all of the iron work the perfect highlight to shine! It wasn’t in the original plans to use metallic but as soon as Angela of A to Z Custom Creations started working on this piece for a repeat client, she knew the original hardware needed to match better with the new aged red – and it was our metallic paint to the rescue! She has a great eye and we love the results!

By using Modern Masters Metallic Paints and Metal Effects products, these artists were able to bring just the right amount of color and shimmer to their projects with very little effort!  We hope you’ve been inspired to give your next project a little something extra and if so, feel free to share it with us on our Facebook Fan Page as we love to discover and share new works of art.
