Using a 2″ brush or cigar roller, apply a thin, even coat of Snowflake Metallic Paint on the napkin. Let dry 30 minutes to an hour between coats. At the end of the project, there will be two blue borders and an area between the borders in Snowflake Metallic we just painted. Be sure to check out the end results so that you can visually see how all the steps are going to come together!
We are now creating and working on the borders. Apply the 1/4″ masking tape to the very top and bottom edges of the napkin. Starting on the TOP left side of the napkin, measure down 2 inches and make a small pencil dot. Repeat this on the right side, then flip the napkin and repeat on the bottom. Use the blue Painters Tape and tape from dot to dot horizontally, creating the borders.
I would suggest planning out the stencil design placement (both the vinyl stencils and the mylar stencils) ahead of time. Once you have your design in mind, place the vinyl sticky snowflakes onto the napkin, INSIDE the taped borders only. (I used free holiday vector snowflake patterns found online and generated them on a Cricut.) Burnish the tape edges and snowflakes to create a good solid seal as we’ll be painting over them. You can re-apply Snowflake Metallic Paint to help seal the edges, which I did. Let dry.
Use the cigar roller to apply a thin layer of Shimmering Sky Metallic inside the taped border areas where the snowflakes are and let dry. Repeat until opaque and then let dry fully.
Remove the sticky snowflake vinyl stencils and then position the snowflake mylar stencils by Royal Design Studio to taste. You can overlap them if you’d like! Stencil the patterns with the Snowflake Metallic Paint and stencil brush, taking care to offload the material thoroughly from the stencil brush to ensure no leakage under the stencil. While the Snowflake Metallic Paint is still wet, remove the stencil and sprinkle black or white fine glitter to taste. Let dry, brush off the extra glitter, and remove the tape. Your borders are done!
For the center area painted with Snowflake Metallic Paint, we will now be creating a birch tree pattern. Use a pencil to LIGHTLY draw in a few guidelines for the birch bark pattern, the looser the better. (You can Google birch tree images for reference.) Use the fine artist brush and loosely paint the random horizontal birch bark lines with Black Pearl Metallic Paint. Let dry. You are done with your holiday project!
