Valentine’s Day DIY: Lettered Canvas Art

There are many ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day and one is to create a custom canvas art with a sweet sentiment that will be treasured forever. Snap up this DIY with heart from paintress extraordinaire, Debbie Hayes of My Patch of Blue Sky.

Lettered Love Canvas DIY | Valentine's Day Project Tutorial by My Patch of Blue Sky

SUPPLIES
  • Modern Masters Pearl White Metallic Paint
  • Modern Masters Texture Effects
  • One Gallery-wrapped style canvas, any size, pre-primed
  • One Romantic Valentine’s Day phrase like ours, “If I had to live my life again, I’d find you sooner.” An online search reveals lots of options, or write your own.
  • Painter’s Tape, Paint Brush, Small Trowel or Palette Knife, Container, and Sandpaper
INSTRUCTIONS

How to Create a Lettered Custom Canvas | Modern Masters DIY by Debbie Hayes of My Patch of Blue Sky | Love Quote Canvas

I created my quote on a Cricut, using a heavy, sticky-backed material, then cut and pasted them to fit my canvas. You can also use a mylar or vinyl stencil. Arrange the wording on top of the canvas, then tape into place. Cut if necessary to get the look you look you like. Burnish the words so they fit tight to the canvas to prevent leakage underneath. An old credit card will work.

Creating a Raised and Embossed Lettered Canvas with Modern Masters Texture Effects and Metallic Paint | DIY How to Tutorial by My Patch of Blue Sky | Modern Masters Blog

Use a palette knife to gently smooth a thick, even coat of Texture Effects over the words. Make sure that all the words are covered evenly. While drying, gently remove the lettering and tape. You may need to use a toothpick or something sharp to remove the centers of letters like “o”.

How to Create a Lettered Quote Canvas | Tutorial by My Patch of Blue Sky | Modern Masters Blog

Once completely dry, lightly sand the letters evenly. Paint two coats of Pearl White Metallic Paint over the letters and the canvas as well. The Texture Effects is self-priming so this is easy to do over the raised lettering. Let dry completely. Display on a mantle, bookshelf, or anywhere where a bit of dramatic lighting shows off the sentiment to your loved one.

Jyn Erso Cosplay DIY from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Are you as excited about Rogue One opening this week as we are? The one person possibly more excited than us is Katie Gaines of Love Paper Paint. She’s heading to an early screening dressed as Jyn Erso and there’s a bonus in it for you – she’s sharing her cosplay DIY! We’ll let her take it away…

Jyn Erso Cosplay DIY | Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Costume How-to by Love Paper Paint | Modern Masters Blog

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – time for peppermint mochas, gingerbread houses, holiday decorating, sparkling lights and…

…THE NEW STAR WARS MOVIE!!! (I just may be more excited about that than anything else this holiday season!)

A friend invited our family to an exclusive (early) screening of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 15th. So we get to see the film hours earlier than anyone else. How cool is that?! My family is very excited!

Always looking for an excuse to dress up, I thought I’d throw together a quick costume to wear to the movie. But since this is a busy season for me, I don’t have a lot of time or money to spend on creating a costume…I found this photo of smuggler turned Rebel soldier, Jyn Erso, that seemed doable with limited time and resources.

Jyn Erso of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I gathered some materials I had around the house and in my garage:

  1. Old black hat
  2. Safety goggles (you can get these at home improvement stores for under $4)
  3. Flex tubing (under $4, this is used to organize electrical cords)
  4. Black spray paint/primer
  5. Dead batteries (AA size)
  6. Dust mask (these are cheap, you can get a pack of 5 for $6…a smooth plastic respirator would look better, but are considerably more expensive)
  7. My son’s toy blaster (which I had painted for his Halloween costume)
  8. Gaffer’s tape (available online or at music/theater/photography equipment supply stores…it’s not cheap, but it’s one of my favorite materials to use for costume fabrication because it’s versatile, flexible, removable, non-damaging to most surfaces, and can be painted to look like fabric or leather)
  9. Card stock and Fine Tip Black Sharpie
  10. Modern Masters Metallic Paints in Champagne, Statuary Bronze, Blackened Bronze, and Silver. I use Modern Masters paints for everything because of their quality, durability, ease of use and the variety of amazing colors.

BLASTER: (I’m only showing for purposes of the cosplay idea, but won’t be bringing to the screening.) These are photos of the blaster I painted last year for my brother-in-law’s Boba Fett costume and my son’s “post apocalyptic warrior” costume from Halloween. The transformation is pretty awesome considering that the DIY is really very easy: simply spray paint the toy blaster with black primer, then dry brush a little bit of Modern Masters Silver and Blackened Bronze Metallic Paint. As with all Modern Masters products, a little bit goes a long way.

GAS MASK: For the “gas mask” apparatus, I sprayed the flex tubing and the dust mask black and then painted them with Statuary Bronze Metallic Paint. Since this will simply hang around my neck, I’ll attach the flex tubing to the mask and then to my clothes with Gaffer’s tape. I don’t want to have it wrap around my back as it’ll be uncomfortable to sit on in the theater, so I’ll cut the tubing and just have it hang in front of me, or tuck it into my belt.

HAT and GOGGLES: I have a black hat that I use as a painter’s cap and it looks identical to the hat Jyn Erso is wearing in the photo.  Using a little bit of Blackened Bronze Metallic Paint, I lightly dry brushed the edges of the brim to give it a weathered look. I wrapped the safety googles in Gaffer’s tape because it takes paint really well and I wanted to modify the look of the edges. It’s not a perfect match to the smooth metallic frame of Jyn Erso’s goggles, but the tape is completely removable, so once I’m done with the cosplay, I can peel off the tape and use the goggles again for work. After wrapping the goggles, I painted over the Gaffer’s tape with Champagne Metallic Paint and used a Sharpie to draw in some details.

BANDOLIER: For Jyn Erso’s bandolier or ammo belt, I wrapped strips of card stock with Gaffer’s tape to create a sash/belt that will be slung over one shoulder. Then I wrapped the dead AA batteries with Gaffer’s tape and adhered them to the bandolier. Using bits of folded and rolled card stock, covered with Gaffer’s tape, additional pockets and details were added. Again, with a quick dry brushing of Blackened Bronze Metallic Paint, the bandolier was given a battle-worn look.

I would suggest planning out the stencil design placement (both the vinyl stencils and the mylar stencils) ahead of time. Once you have your design in mind, place the vinyl sticky snowflakes onto the placemat. (I used free holiday vector snowflake patterns found online and generated them on a Cricut.) Use a burnishing tool or old credit card to help seal the edges of the snowflakes. You can also apply a thin layer of clear acrylic to seal the edges and prevent any paint from leaking under the vinyl snowflakes. If you seal the snowflakes with the clear acrylic, let this dry before moving on to the next step.

Use the cigar roller to apply a thin layer of Shimmering Sky Metallic Paint to the entire surface of the placemat and let dry about one hour. Repeat with a second coat until the Shimmering Sky becomes opaque. Let dry and then remove the vinyl snowflake patterns, which will reflect the white Snowflake Metallic Paint nicely against the blue of the Shimmering Sky Metallic Paint.

Position the snowflake mylar stencils by Royal Design Studio to taste. You can overlap them like I did or keep them singular. Stencil the patterns with the Snowflake Metallic Paint and stencil brush, taking care to offload the material thoroughly from the stencil brush to ensure no leakage under the stencil. While the Snowflake Metallic Paint is still wet, remove the stencil and sprinkle black or white fine glitter to taste. Let dry and brush off the extra glitter.

After you have your designs on the jar, prime the jar with an acrylic glass primer – bonus points if it can closely match the tone of the Metallic Paint. Let dry. Using a 2″ brush or cigar roller, apply a thin, even coat of Snowflake Metallic Paint on the napkin. Let dry 30 minutes to an hour between coats. At the end of the project, there will be two blue borders and an area between the borders in Snowflake Metallic we just painted. Be sure to check out the end results so that you can visually see how all the steps are going to come together!

We are now creating and working on the borders. Apply the 1/4″ masking tape to the very top and bottom edges of the napkin. Starting on the TOP left side of the napkin, measure down 2 inches and make a small pencil dot. Repeat this on the right side, then flip the napkin and repeat on the bottom. Use the blue Painters Tape and tape from dot to dot horizontally, creating the borders.

Shimmery Woodland Birch Napkin | Christmas DIY How-to Tutorial by Focal Points, Inc. with Modern Masters Metallic Paint

I would suggest planning out the stencil design placement (both the vinyl stencils and the mylar stencils) ahead of time. Once you have your design in mind, place the vinyl sticky snowflakes onto the napkin, INSIDE the taped borders only. (I used free holiday vector snowflake patterns found online and generated them on a Cricut.) Burnish the tape edges and snowflakes to create a good solid seal as we’ll be painting over them. You can re-apply Snowflake Metallic Paint to help seal the edges, which I did. Let dry.

Shimmery Woodland Birch Napkin | Christmas DIY How-to Tutorial by Focal Points, Inc. with Modern Masters Metallic Paint

Use the cigar roller to apply a thin layer of Shimmering Sky Metallic inside the taped border areas where the snowflakes are and let dry. Repeat until opaque and then let dry fully.

Remove the sticky snowflake vinyl stencils and then position the snowflake mylar stencils by Royal Design Studio to taste. You can overlap them if you’d like! Let dry, brush off the extra glitter, and remove the tape. Your borders are done!

For the center area painted with Snowflake Metallic Paint, we will now be creating a birch tree pattern. Use a pencil to LIGHTLY draw in a few guidelines for the birch bark pattern, the looser the better. (You can Google birch tree images for reference.) Use the fine artist brush and loosely paint the random horizontal birch bark lines with Black Pearl Metallic Paint. Let dry. You are done with your holiday project!

How to Create a Birch Tree Wine Glass | DIY Tutorial by My Patch of Blue Sky | Modern Masters Shimmerstone

I recently visited the headquarters of Modern Masters and was inspired to create this holiday project by the beautiful birch trees around the property, with a winter twist. For the stem, use a small brush to add the simulated tree bark, using ShimmerStone. The ShimmerStone adheres to glass beautifully and gives a shimmery textured look and feel.

DIY Birch Tree Wine Glass | Winter Holiday DIY by My Patch of Blue Sky using Modern Masters Shimmerstone

Prepare the frosting bag with ShimmerStone. I kept it the original color here but if you wanted to, you could tint the ShimmerStone to taste using color concentrates. Use the frosting bag to create texture for birch bark and also add snowflakes and stars. Have your preferred image handy to guide your artwork, if needed.

Modern Masters Christmas DIY: Birch Tree Wine Glass | How-to Holiday Table Setting Project by Debbie Hayes of My Patch of Blue Sky

Once the Shimmerstone has dried, add a few lines of Black Pearl Metallic Paint (not shown) to further simulate the birch bark look. Let dry. Use for wine (wash by hand) or as a candleholder, with small tea lights. If using as a wine glass, we would recommend drinking out of the back area where there is no ShimmerStone. Of course, the beauty of this project is that you can customize the placement of your design from the top to suit your use of the project.

DIY Holiday Door Frame | Modern Masters Tutorial by Mary Childs of Focal Points, Inc.

Apply your collection of decorations to the back side of the frame with a hot glue gun. It is super easy to use any extra ribbon, ornaments, poinsettias, glitter, and more. I used a single ribbon wound on each side and glued them together at the top. In the alternate, you could also use a longer single ribbon and wind them down both sides, securing the ribbon in the back with the hot glue. My holiday ribbon holds the frame on the door hanger but you can also use the frame itself. Make sure you allow the glue to dry at least 24 hours before hanging!
