Holiday DIY: A Scandinavian Easter

My hubby is from rural South Carolina where by family tradition, he and his siblings created an outdoor Easter “nest” the night before the Easter bunny would arrive, leaving delicious treats. The area he grew up in is very like the beach, with sand, soaring pine trees, pine cones, and many types of moss. All great for making a nest. This project can be made inside or outside – on a sideboard, coffee table or out on the patio. Scour your yard for twigs, stones, ferns, or anything earthy, similar to Scandinavian style. Natural and simple. ~ Debbie Hayes of My Patch of Blue Sky

A Scandinavian Easter | How to DIY by My Patch of Blue Sky with Modern Masters Metallic Paints

SUPPLIES
  • Black Pearl Metallic Paint
  • Pewter Matte Metallic
  • Oyster Matte Metallic
  • Zinsser® Bulls Eye 1-2-3® Water-Base Primer, or like
  • Large and Small plastic or wood Easter eggs
  • Paint brushes
  • Container to hold large eggs upright
  • Paper towels
  • String or jut
  • Small feathers
  • Moss or found objects from your yard
  • Glass cloche (optional)
  • Container (like the hand-carved wooden bowl used) to feature the large egg
INSTRUCTIONS

Prime the eggs using two coats of Zinsser® Bulls Eye 1-2-3® Water-Base Primer, or a like primer. You can use a large-mouth container to prop large eggs on while working. Let dry. Paint two coats of metallic colors on each egg, letting dry completely after each coat. I used both the Modern Masters Matte Metallics and Metallic Paint Collection to have both a natural satin and matte sheen. If the eggs are made of wood, you can choose to leave some unpainted as well.

Using Venetian Plaster to create an elegant raised design on an Easter Egg | Modern Masters How-to by Debbie Hayes of My Patch of Blue Sky

Open the Venetian Plaster. Follow the cake decorator assembly instructions. Open up the bag and prop it in a clean container. Use a stir stick to add Venetian Plaster to the bag. Put enough in the bag so you can grab it easily in your hand. Close and twist the bag until the plaster is about to squirt out of the tip.

DIY Metallic Easter Eggs with a Beautiful Raised Scroll Pattern Design | Modern Masters How-to by My Patch of Blue Sky

On another surface, like an old piece of cardboard, practice squeezing the bag while applying some plaster in a swirling motion. I found it easier to keep the tip about 1/16″ above the surface instead of dragging it.

Starting at the top of the egg, slowly apply the Venetian Plaster to the surface. Watch where you put your fingers while you hold the egg, so that you don’t smear the pattern. Carefully place the egg onto a container to dry, which can take hours or overnight. Add more pattern when it’s dry if you like. Let dry completely.

Blue Pearlized Easter Egg with a Pretty Scroll Design | How-to by My Patch of Blue Sky using Modern Masters products

You can use a standard Matte Metallic or do as I did, create a custom metallic matte blue color mix of Modern Masters products. Depending upon how many eggs you are painting, this recipe will paint two coats on several eggs:

  • 8 ounces of Oyster Matte Metallic
  • 1/2 TBSP Emerald Green Platinum Series Glazing Cream Color
  • 1/2 TBSP Custom Blue Platinum Series Glazing Cream Color

Use a brush to paint 2 coats of the color mix and let dry completely after each coat.

Using the 2″ brush, paint the primed surface with Pale Gold Matte Metallic. I used a swirling motion while applying the Matte Metallic to create some interest. Apply 2 – 3 coats or until a solid color is achieved and let dry completely. Gather your tape measure, graphite transfer paper, doggy image, and pencil for the next step.

Use a small artist brush to paint in the dog images with the Statuary Bronze Matte Metallic. Apply 2 – 3 coats until a solid color is achieved and let dry. If you have a trim area, consider painting that with the Statuary Bronze as a nice compliment, as we did here. Feel free to erase any pencil lines that haven’t been painted over completely.

Mix one part Tobacco Brown with two parts Furniture & Cabinetry Glazing Cream. Apply the mix to the entire plaque with the 2″ brush. Dab off excess with a clean dry rag and let dry completely. This ages the Matte Metallic for a beautiful finish.
