Artsy Chicks Rule with Modern Masters!

One of our friends and bloggers, Nancy from Artsy Chicks Rule, recently did a table makeover that fully embodies the term “drab to fab”. Using our Metallic Paint Collection, she took a $3 thrift store furniture find and transformed it completely with a two-color paint finish and a beautiful hand-drawn compass rose. Want to know more? Let’s go!

Modern Masters Metallic Paint Table Makeover - Before | Project by Artsy Chicks RuleOh, it looks sad, doesn’t it? Nancy saw a diamond in the rough with this table – even though it had glue and nail polish on it!  She sanded and chipped away at the residue and then used a spray primer in white to finish her prepwork.

Compass Rose on Table Top with Modern Masters Metallics | Projects by Artsy Chicks RuleCompass Rose on Table Top Close-up | Modern Masters Metallic Paint Project by Artsy Chicks RuleNancy loved both the Warm Silver and Oyster Metallic Paint colors and used them to paint the legs, body and top of the table.  Once those were dry, she drew a compass rose with chalk on the center of the round table top and painted it in with the Oyster.

Decorative Paint Projects to Inspire!

We recently wrapped up our Fresh Ideas in Bloom Photo Contest where many of you submitted your fantastic Modern Masters projects. While we announced the contest winners a few weeks ago, we thought we’d take this chance to highlight some of the wonderful artistry submitted by decorative painters.  It’s time to get inspired!

Wonderful Wall Finish by artist Rebecca PickrelFine artist Rebecca Pickrel was faced with a cinderblock closet that was to be made into a wine closet. Using gold metallic foil as a base, she first textured and then stenciled with several colors of our Metallic Plasters.  What a gorgeous result!

Metallic Paint on Furniture by Canada's Suzanne PrattThis warm and lovely cabinet was painted by Canadian artist Suzanne Pratt of Venetian Studios.  She used four colors from our Metallic Paint Collection: Warm Silver, Champagne, Pewter and Copper.  Starting with a very soft creamy yellow as a base, she layered them onto one other until she found a pleasing and chic washed effect.

Wall Treatment with Modern Masters | Artist: Leanne LeeThis beautiful textured wall finish was created by artist Leanne Lee of Rekindled Spaces with Metal Effects Iron Reactive Paint, Rust Activator, Texture Effects and Silver Metallic Paint.

Refrigerator textured with Shimmerstone by Modern Masters | Artist: Kristen ButlerKristen Butler was given an old armoire by a friend.  She didn’t like the light color of the wood so she based the piece with a deep purple and used ShimmerStone in a troweled application over that color. “I tinted it as dark as I could with the Blue Velvet Colorant and then sealed it with MasterClear® Protective Clear Topcoat for protection,” she explains. So striking!

Metallic Paint on Cabinets by artist Krista VindKrista Vind, owner of The Studio Destin, used our Silver Metallic Paint to charmingly transform kitchen cabinetry and used an aging glaze over the top for a wonderful contemporary finish.  Just as Krista did, we recommend using an appropriate primer and topcoat to both prepare and protect your surfaces.

Ornamental and Decorative Painting on Elevator Doors and Walls by Artist Adrian RidgelyArtist Adrian Ridgley painted an incredible trompe l’oeil effect on an elevator door with our Metallic Paint Collection. The walls were faux finished with Tintable Glaze into a stained wood look and all the details were painted with the metallic paints as well. This gorgeous residence is in the Park Towers of Las Vegas.

We will be showcasing more of the fantastic Modern Masters project submissions and no worries – you’ll have a chance to enter your own as we have plans to throw another photo contest soon!  In the meantime, we’d love to hear about what you think of these projects so be sure to leave us a comment!

Modern Mastery: Kindra Benge & Ashlie Bickford

We love when decorative painting studios share their Modern Masters projects with us! Ashlie Bickford and Kindra Binge of A Fabulous Finish posted a few of projects on our Facebook fan page and we were taken with their creativity and talent. We’re happy to share our chat with them about their studio and their artistry!

Kindra Benge and Ashlie Bickford of A Fabulous Finish Studio in TexasKindra Benge and Ashlie Bickford are cousins from The Woodlands, Texas and both are the artists behind A Fabulous Finish. Each has a passion for the arts and design that they learned from a very young age. Growing up, they helped in their grandfather’s family business, Houston’s Burkes Upholstery. Summers were filled with answering phones, interacting with interior designers that came through looking for the perfect fabric and helping the designers pick the perfect wingback chair or just the right feet for their sofa. They absorbed all their business and decor experiences and in 2002, decided to make their own mark in the design world by offering their artistic skills with their own decorative painting company. The economy in Texas is booming for them and they feel extremely blessed to have been working so many years in a business they love!

Beautiful Wall and Ceiling Finishes with Modern Masters | Artist: A Fabulous Finish

The master bedroom walls have a soft, random stencil in Antique Bronze Metallic Paint peeking through Venetian Plaster.  The Ceiling is done in a mixture of Antique Bronze, Antique Copper and English Brown from the Metallic Paint Collection.

What is your most memorable, challenging or rewarding project?

We would have to say our most challenging project was one in which we had the largest indoor scaffolding inside a residence we’ve experienced. To say the project was stressful is an understatement. The project included lots and lots of Modern Masters Antique Bronze!

Handpainted Modern Masters Metallic Barrel Celing by A Fabulous Finish Studio

Modern Masters Metallic Plasters in Espresso and Aged Gold were first troweled over gold foil. Ornamental swirls were then handpainted with both English Brown and Pale Gold Metallic Paints.

How has Modern Masters enhanced your business?

For a long time we struggled in getting our metallic finishes “just right”. We tried everything and nothing seemed to sparkle just the way we wanted it to! So, we tried Modern Masters and haven’t stopped since! We use Modern Masters on almost every job, from glazes, Metallics, Venetian Plaster, etc. It really is a great line of products.

What is your go-to Modern Masters product and/or color?

While Ashlie and I love to use the Metallic Paint Collection, we probably enjoy using the Venetian Plaster the most. We love to use it on canvas art in a “dragged textured style”.  They are smooth, easy to use and can be tinted to any color.

Art Niches with Modern Masters products by A Fabulous Finish

The art niches were done in Teal Metallic Paint and Aged Gold Metallic Plaster dragged in a linear fashion. Striking!

We hope you’ve enjoyed the artistry of Kindra and Ashlie – many thanks to them both for sharing their projects with us!  Please be sure to visit their studio website, A Fabulous Finish, as well as follow them on their Facebook page, where they love to give tips, share their projects and both encourage and interact with their fans.
