We are excited to showcase a phenomenal artist, Tobey Renee Sanders of FauxDecor, for our Modern Mastery features! We first encountered her beautiful work on Twitter and fascinating projects on Instagram. She is based in Atlanta, Georgia but frequently can be found traveling on behalf of her clients. We caught up with her in between projects and television appearances to talk all about her artistry and Modern Masters.
Tobey Renee Sanders says that Faux Decor just fell into her lap. She was right out of college, working as an IT consultant when she purchased a new loft. Desperately needing to decorate, she started with silver paint, using a criss-cross effect with a wide brush. “Next thing I know, I’m painting all of my friends and family’s homes for free, not realizing that this was a potential business”, she laughs. Eventually, she got hip to the process, quit her job and went to various faux finishing schools. Over the years, decorative painting has afforded her the opportunity to work with many amazing people. Her clients are typically young professionals between the ages of 25 – 40 and she’s acquired a loyal celebrity client base as well. Her work has been seen in several publications, however it’s the TV and Film features that have been the most exciting for her. Some examples of her appearances are in TI & Tiny: The Family Hustle, La La’s Full Court Life and Bravo’s The Kandi Factory. She has used Modern Masters products diligently over the years as she feels the finishes they create always look amazing on television. Her specialty is plastering, such as Venetian Plaster, Metallic Plaster and textures, to name a few. She loves her faux finishing career because her creativity is never-ending and she’s able to provide her clients with unique finishes she custom-creates just for them. She credits this creativity, along with her high levels of service and business ethics, keeping her business successful.
How has Modern Masters enhanced your business?
Modern Master has really taken my business to the next level. The Metallic Paint Collection to be specific. My clients are very modern, ultra contemporary, young and hip. They want affordable finishes that look like they’ve spent a ton of money! I had been using other metallic paints that just didn’t cut it. They were either too thin or offered a horrible color selection. When I discovered Modern Masters, it’s was like an ‘aha’ moment for me!! The paints are super thick, amazing coverage and come in a beautiful array of colors. I create great dragging effect techniques for my clients. On about 90% of my projects I use Modern Masters Metallic Paint on trim and doors as well. It frames my work so beautifully. This is the icing on the cake for all my projects!
What is your top finishing tip?
My top finishing tip is to work clean!! Lets face it, faux finishing is a messy business. So keep all buckets combed down when working. Bits of dried material can be very frustrating if you are applying Venetian Plaster!!! I truly believe the more organized you are and the cleaner you work, the more efficient you’ll be. Efficiency directly effects my time, and time is money.
What is your dream finishing project?
THE WHITE HOUSE. Seeing how I am African-American, it’s only natural to want to faux for the President of the United States!! I would absolutely love to work with Barack and Michelle. Meeting the first family and having my work in the Oval Office, well maybe a den, would be a dream come true.
Tobey also donates her time to philanthropic efforts, most recently with Room Service Atlanta, a not-for-profit organization that strives to provide warm, welcoming environments for homeless families struggling to get back on their feet. A worthy cause! We want to thank Tobey Renee Sanders of FauxDecor so much for sharing her gorgeous artistry with us!
