Broads with Brushes was founded in 1997 by Andrea Blair. As she worked on her decorative painting career, she was also studying at the University of Texas and graduated in 2001. Since then, the Broads with Brushes reputation and work has blossomed and she now leads a team of artists for their ongoing projects. Based in Midland, Texas, both Andrea and the Broads with Brushes team are renowned for creating custom environments and each space is infused by a warmth and uniqueness which goes far beyond what traditional paints can achieve. We had a chance to “chat” with Andrea and learn more about her company, philosophy and her artistic works with the Modern Masters decorative finishing products.
What is the first work of art you remember creating?
I was lucky enough to have a relationship with my Great Grandmother, MaMom. I used to spend summer at their house where I learned how to cook and clean with her and how to build things with my Great Grandfather, Pop. MaMom was an artist. She painted on canvas in oil but she never did it when I visited because she did not want me wasting her precious paint. One year, I went to visit and she told me that she believed I was drawing well enough that she thought it was about time I learned to paint as well. That was the first time that I made art and knew that I would never stop making it.
How has Modern Masters enhanced your business?
How has it NOT enhanced my business? Modern Masters has so many products from texture to acid it makes my head spin! I love the metallic paint colors because they don’t change their hue if I thin them out. That was the first reason I started using them. The texture products are great for walls but they also work on canvas or objects. I refinished some frames and candlesticks at home with Texture Effects and Metal Effects. They look like we dragged them up from the ocean floor. I also used SkimStone on one of my countertops a few years ago and it has held up very well!
What is the most inspiring space or place you have visited?
I would have to say Italy. I went to Florence and was overwhelmed by the architecture and aged plaster. Everything is so old and crusty and beautiful. The art is incredible whether it has a famous name attached or just a working artist with a studio shop. The landscape is extraordinary compared to my little desert town. I wish I could go and live there for a year or two and just work on new ideas and projects that I could do for clients.
What are some of your favorite Modern Masters finishes?
My all time favorite is the Metal Effects. I love it because I have a predictable outcome without the instant effect. I love watching the patina dry and morph into a gorgeous and interesting finish. I love that I really don’t have to think about pattern or trying to be random for it to look legitimate. The product almost works on its own!
